Saipan was the site of some very heavy fighting in WWII between the US and Japanese. The US Marines invaded Saipan in June 1944 and fought for a month to secure the island from the determined and well dug in Japanese Army. Despite the battle being 60 years ago, there are still some WWII locations and wrecks on the island.
